Help! I just got into a fender bender! What do I do?

Posted on April 16, 2017 at 12:50 AM

FIRST.  No matter how minor the accident, and no matter how "good" or "ok" you feel, still seek immediate medical attention! I've had people tell me that they felt great initailly but then the next day they felt like they were literally "hit by a car."  Often, the first few moments of what seems like a very "simple" accident, our body will produce adrenaline.  When it kicks in it triggers our body's "fight or filght" system. The sudden rush endorphines help our body stay strong until the danager is over. Once it's over any pain they you would have normally felt at the time of the accident hits you.

Second.  Do not talk to anyone about the accident!  Any statements you make could harm any potentially claim for damages.  Insurance companies will often use your "excited" statements against you.  When/if speaking to the police about the accident give ONLY the basic facts of what happened.  Leave your opinion and your desire to be "right" out of it.  You will have ample time to explain what happeded later.

Third.      Contact an attorney that understands the complexities of auto accidents.  You want to make sure that any potential claim you have is handled fairly and competently.  Even if your decide that an attorney is not needed for your claim, speaking to one can still ease your mind.

Finally.   Remain as calm as is reasonably possible.  When we are excited we tend to say things that may not be accurate.  Remember the basic 3 steps above to protect yourself.
